A probationary period provides a time to review the performance of a new recruit, to ensure objectives are being achieved and to provide any necessary initial training to get the employee 'up to speed'. It is the ideal time to nip any potential problems in the bud before they become disciplinary or longer-term unsatisfactory performance issues. It also allows the employee to discuss any concerns they may have with the job or to highlight any additional training needs. Most probationary periods are between three and six months, however temporary contracts or manual jobs often have a shorter period, eg one month.
