The key to handling any form of sickness absence is proactive management. This not only protects you against employment tribunal claims but also enables you to offer support and reassurance to staff suffering from illness and to manage effectively during their absence. Absences may be caused by different reasons and need to be managed in different ways. Persistent intermittent absence, malingering and unauthorised absence would normally be dealt with through the disciplinary procedure; long-term absence would normally be regarded as a capability issue. Other genuine reasons for absence include family leave, disability, time off for public duties etc.
