Summary

All employees make NI contributions (NICs) from their gross pay, directly from payroll, provided they are over 16 and under State Pension Age, and their earnings are above the lower earnings threshold. The employer also pays NICs on all employee payments and benefits. National Insurance payments contribute to an individual's entitlement to State Pension or other Social Security benefits such as job seekers' and maternity allowances.
