Summary
Employers have a duty of care to their employees: this duty requires them to take action when they are aware of workplace stress. Failure to do this can lead to significant awards for damages as well as lower morale, reduced productivity, poor retention and difficulties in recruitment. As more employers begin to understand their duty of care obligations and the benefits of having healthy, well-supported staff, they are looking for the best and most cost-effective ways to ensure that their employees are able to access the support they need. One solution is to offer a confidential counselling service, commonly termed an "Employee Assistance Programme" (EAP), provided either in-house or by an external provider. Many small organisations do not have the resources to set up support schemes themselves and many larger ones also regard this sort of specialised service as one to outsource.
