Although zero hours contracts (where no guaranteed hours are provided) have been around for decades, particularly in the hospitality and healthcare sectors, the use of these contracts has extended. Larger businesses are more likely to use them: 40% of businesses with more than 250 workers make some use of contracts with no guaranteed hours, compared with around 10% of businesses with fewer than 10 workers. 26% of businesses in the accommodation and food industry employ some staff on a zero hours basis - they are therefore used by many of our best known employers, including JD Wetherspoon, Burger King, Domino's Pizza, and McDonald's. In this article we look at the practical considerations for using zero hour contracts.
